As a lover of poetry, I was intrigued when I stumbled upon the One Best Thing iBook entitled, "APPlied Poetry: Creating and Publishing Multimedia Poetry." The author, Karen Bosch, provides multiple ideas for incorporating iPad applications into poetry lessons. These included: - Acrostic poems using Drawing Pad / Doodle Budy - Personification Poetry using FaceJack, FaceTalk, UnicornShots and Fotolr - Color Poetry using Labelbox, Pages, Phonto, and A+Signature - Address Poetry using Tellagami or Puppet Pals HD - Six Word Nature Poetry using Phonto, A+Signature, and Pic Collage - Publication projects using Book Creator It was awesome to see these applications applied in such a meaningful and engaging way for a lesson. My personal favorite was the "Personification Poetry" in which students created a poem from the point of view of an object, and then animated a picture of that object to present it. I would have loved such a project. Check out this hilarious photo: More than a few lesson ideas, this iBook challenged me to think about how to realistically incorporate apps that typically appear to be more novelty into projects. The apps used in the personification project are so ridiculous that I would never think to use them in a lesson. This iBook challenged that thinking. Incorporating somewhat whacky applications into student projects can increase student engagement and create some awesome end products, as Karen showed through her class projects.
