This week I had my first experience with Apple Teacher, a website that helps educators become proficient with Apple programs on an iPad or Macbook. As I explored the website, I was surprised to find that many of the applications I used day-to-day could be used for lesson plans, homework assignments, and even improved parent-teacher communication. Apple Teacher gamifies the education process, similar to that of Khan Academy. With a focus on the use of device applications, teachers are prompted to read over explanations formatted in an iBook and take a quiz afterward to earn badges as evidence of their mastery. As a novice with Apple products, I started my journey reading through the iPad Starter Guide. While this iBook was helpful and well organized, in some cases it left room for confusion. For example, although I could easily discern how to use slide over to multitask, I had to use a search engine to find out how to change to a different application in the side bar. In another instance, I was experimenting with Messages' handwritten capabilities and easily wrote my handwritten message, but somehow I ended up sending a message intended for my mom to my professor. (This was slightly embarrassing.) In short, don't expect this guide to answer all of your questions. My favorite discovery was the multicolored sketching feature in Notes. An artist at heart, I could instantly see the potential for this in the classroom. Students could sketch word maps for a brainstorming session in English. They could write out their math problems in Geometry. In a Human Development course, students could actively doodle the 3 domains of development during a guided lecture. Who knew Apple could help make note taking fun? Overall, the iPad Starter Guide was pretty user-friendly. While I had to seek clarification in some specifics from outside sources, Apple did a nice job of keeping this introductory information concise. Plus, I did enjoy the satisfaction of earning my bright, shiny iPad Badge. (I really am a child at heart.) Watch out, Apple Teacher! Ms. Field is determined to be your next rising star.
