This week I really enjoyed exploring Dr Eric Langhorst’s blog, Speaking of History. For one, I am always a fan of the personal touch that video blogs provide, and he uses these frequently. While I appreciate a well-crafted post, there is something about hearing the information come directly from another human being that makes me more interested in the subject at hand. As I listened to one of these vlogs, I even found myself becoming curious about his travel plans for the week ahead despite the fact that the information really wan’t pertinent to me at all.
That being said, there’s something powerful about personal instruction. Even if it’s through a screen, I would prefer that someone explain a concept to me via video rather than giving me a worksheet with bulleted instructions to follow. Though this was not perhaps something I anticipated taking away from my blog exploration, watching his blogs honestly reminded me of the importance of being a quality lecturer. I know “lecture” tends to be a dirty word in education these days, but I still think it is possible to make lectures engaging. Overall, I thought the blog was well put together. The blog archive on the side was helpful for sifting through old posts. The “About Me” section provided a nice snapshot into the author. Though maybe not very aesthetically appealing, the content was quality. I could see myself looking to this blog in the future for more information about Google Classroom. Make sure to check out Dr. Langhorst's blog, Speaking of History. You can also find him on Twitter at @ELanghorst.
